CARE MAY VARY DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE JEWELLERY IS MADE OF GOLD OR SILVER

— OR GOLD PLATED SILVER.

It is important to take good care of your jewelry. We recommend storing your jewelry in the original BY•L boxes. You can bring your BY•L jewelry to our store for inspection if it starts to show signs of wear.

SILVER

We always recommend removing silver jewellery, rhodium (silver-plated) and 18kt gold-plated (gold-plated) jewellery before sleeping, swimming, exercising, and steaming. It is also important to apply perfume, creams, and oils before putting on jewellery.

Also keep in mind that it falls on silver in Iceland and the silver turns black, including silver under gilding. It is quite simple, however, to polish or clean the jewellery if it has fallen on it, with a cloth or cleaning agent that you can buy from us.

BRACELET - rhodium & gold

The strands in the Braids are flat and hard, interwoven into a single whole. The flat strands are more fragile than, for example, the classic link chains that most of us are familiar with. Breakage can occur in flat chains like the Braid, and therefore they need to be cared for differently than coarser jewellery.

  • It is important to remove the braid before going to bed, as during sleep, a pull or break can occur without us realizing it. If a break occurs, the chain weakens and can unravel or break.

  • Remove it before swimming, exercising or steaming, just like with other silver jewellery.

  • The braids have a diamond cut that gives them this beautiful shine. To maintain the shine, creams & oils should be applied before putting on the jewellery and removed before strenuous activities such as exercise.

  • You can maintain the shine at home with our cleaning fluid and a silver cloth, even if you've taken it to the gym, steam room, or swimming.

  • We always see when there is an abnormal break in the braids or whether there are any defects.

Many things can happen, for example, bracelets get caught in a sweater or get caught on a doorknob, and as mentioned earlier, during sleep, there is a pull and we can see it clearly, and it is not considered a manufacturing defect.

Our goldsmiths are skilled at repairing braids that have been damaged, but when there is a break from sleep or pulling, it can be more difficult. We strongly recommend that you come to us and have our goldsmiths inspect the braid to see if anything has happened.

To maintain the gilding on gold-plated braids, we recommend removing it before showering, swimming, exercising, steaming and sleeping, but the pH level of the skin also has an effect on gilding / rhodium plating. High skin acidity destroys gilding faster, and hormones (pregnancy/breastfeeding) can also have an effect.

It is normal care to need to re-gold-plated jewellery - when and how often depends entirely on use.

GOLD PLATING AND RE-COATING

Silver plated with 18kt gold and 14kt gold are two different things. The gold plating allows us to buy gold-colored jewellery at a much lower price than if it were made of real gold.

Gilding on silver jewellery is a skin, even if the skin is thick and fine, skin is always skin and will come off over time, it all depends on how well the jewellery is cared for how long the gilding lasts. The positive thing is that precious metals, like silver, can always be re-gilded.

We therefore recommend taking your gold jewellery off before showering, swimming, exercising, steaming and sleeping, but the pH level of the skin also has an effect on gold plating / rhodium plating . High skin acidity wears away gold plating faster, and hormones (pregnancy/breastfeeding) can also have an effect.

When you are not wearing your jewellery, store it in a jewellery box or other closed container, even a zip-lock bag, but not in a bowl or on a jewellery hanger in the bathroom, as it will quickly oxidize (tarnish the silver, turn black).

When the gilding starts to wear off or the gilding starts to wear off, keep in mind that jewellery made from precious metals (like all jewellery from us) can be re-gilded and cleaned as mentioned above.

It is normal care to need to re-gold-plated jewellery - when and how often depends entirely on use.

GOLDEN RINGS

Silver rings with 18kt gold plating need special care. We use our hands the most in everyday life, so rings are the most susceptible to wear and tear. It is the nature of silver that it will tarnish and wear down over time, and the smooth surfaces of silver rings can scratch just like gold.

The gilding on the ring is leather, and not everyone realizes that the ring needs to be removed before hand washing so that the gilding lasts as long as possible.

The pH level of the skin also has an effect on gold plating / rhodium plating. High skin acidity wears away gold plating faster, and hormones (pregnancy/breastfeeding) can also have an effect.

Gold jewellery (14kt gold +) can be taken swimming and showering without falling on them. However, there are many other things that have an effect, such as skin oils, creams, oils or perfume as mentioned before. If you wear your jewellery a lot, it will get grease that can be cleaned off with soapy water, a soft brush, cleaning agents and cloths - it can also happen that gold darkens slightly in our water here in Iceland.

PEARLS & GEMSTONES

Hairspray and perfume should be kept away from gemstones and pearls, so we recommend applying perfume and hairspray before putting on jewellery with pearls or gemstones. Pearls are particularly sensitive to these substances, but the finish can become dull.

Gemstones vary in sensitivity to these substances - but don't hesitate to ask BY•L staff for more information about your gemstone.
