Fiskiflétta and Fossflétta are undoubtedly our best-selling jewelry lines throughout the years and are always as popular as they are incredibly beautiful and classic.
Here we discuss how to best care for both Fish Braid and Waterfall Braid made of 925 sterling silver, which is either rhodium plated (silver color), gold plated with 18kt gold plating, or has a black rhodium coating.
The strands in the braids are flat and hard, which are intertwined into a single whole. The flat strands are more fragile than, for example, the classic link chains that most of us are familiar with. Breakage can occur in flat chains, just like braids, and therefore they need to be considered differently than coarser jewelry. Here are a few points that are good to keep behind your ear:
- It is important to remove the braid before going to bed, as during sleep, a pull or break can occur without us realizing it. If a break occurs, the chain weakens and can unravel or break.

- Remove it before swimming, exercising or steaming, just like with other silver jewelry.

- The braids have a diamond cut that gives them this beautiful shine. To maintain the shine, creams & oils should be applied before putting on the jewelry and removed before strenuous activities such as exercise.

- You can maintain the shine at home with our cleaning fluid and a silver cloth, even if you've taken it to the gym, steam room, or swimming.

- We always see when there is an abnormal break in the braids or whether there are any defects.

Many things can happen, for example, bracelets get caught in a sweater or get caught on a doorknob, and as mentioned earlier, during sleep, there is a pull and we can see it clearly, and it is not considered a manufacturing defect.
Our goldsmiths are skilled at repairing braids that have been damaged, but when there is a break from sleep or pulling, it can be more difficult. We strongly recommend that you come to us and have our goldsmiths inspect the braid to see if anything has happened.
In order to maintain the gilding on gold-plated jewelry, we especially recommend removing it before showering, swimming, exercising, steaming and sleeping, but note that the pH level of the skin also has an effect on gold plating / rhodium plating. High skin acidity destroys gold plating faster, and hormones (pregnancy/breastfeeding) can have an effect. But don't worry, it's normal care to need to re-gild plated jewelry - when and how often depends entirely on use.
You can therefore come to us if the gilding is starting to show, because jewelry made of precious metals, such as 925 silver, can be re-gilded.
